Khác với trẻ em, người lớn có tính độc lập và chủ động cao. Do đó, trong học tập cũng như trong cuộc sống, họ mong muốn được độc lập, chủ động, tự quyết định mục đích, và thời gian học. Tất nhiên trách nhiệm về việc học của họ phải đòi hỏi cao hơn ở trẻ em. Xuất phát từ vị thế và vai trò của người lớn, học tập của người lớn có động cơ, nhu cầu và đặc điểm hoàn toàn khác so với trẻ em. Học tập của người lớn hoàn toàn mang tính chất tự nguyện. Người lớn chỉ thực sự tham gia học tập khi nào họ thấy cần.
