Kết quả của một cuộc điều tra trong năm 2003 của Viện Nghiên cứu con người Việt nam cho thấy, với câu hỏi: "Ông, bà có cảm thấy xấu hổ khi con mình học hành không bằng người khác không?", có 78,3% trả lời: "Đáng xấu hổ !". Vì vậy không ngạc nhiên chút nào nếu áp lực học tập và áp lực thành tích không chỉ đặt lên vai các em ở trường mà ngay từ trong ngôi nhà các em đang sống. Thực tế, có nhiều trẻ em đã bắt đầu đi học từ rất sớm, không chỉ học môn Tiếng việt, toán mà còn học Tiếng anh vì mục tiêu của cha mẹ là không muốn con mình thua kém bạn bè. Tuy nhiên, việc ép trẻ học quá nhiều lại mang đến những hậu quả nghiêm trọng mà các bác sĩ tâm lý đã đưa ra để làm rõ sự thật rằng cha mẹ không nên đặt áp lực học tập đối với trẻ nhỏ cũng như học sinh
