Listening (nghe) có vai trò quan trọng trong cuộc sống và học tập, bởi theo Joan Morley (2001, trang 70), “nghe được sử dụng nhiều hơn bất cứ một kỹ năng ngôn ngữ nào”: gấp gần một nửa so với nói, và bốn đến năm lần so với đọc và viết. Trong việc học một ngoại ngữ hay ngôn ngữ thứ hai, Listening là một kĩ năng không thể thiếu, nhưng lại là phần mà đa số sinh viên còn yếu. Chính vì vậy, họ không thể thể hiện tốt khi làm bài kiểm tra nghe trên lớp.
Vì những lý do cơ bản nêu trên, các nhà nghiên cứu quyết định thực hiện đề tài này, nhằm tìm ra một số chiến lược hữu ích để giúp sinh viên vượt qua thực trạng này thông qua việc đi tìm câu trả lời cho hai câu hỏi (research questions) sau:


Công cụ nghiên cứu bao gồm bản câu hỏi điều tra và phỏng vấn. Câu hỏi khảo sát được thiết kế thành hai phần, mỗi phần tập trung giải quyết hiệu quả một câu hỏi nghiên cứu đã được đề ra. Phần đầu là những câu trắc nghiệm nhiều lựa chọn, yêu cầu đối tượng nghiên cứu khoanh tròn các đáp án từ a đến d đối với các tình huống định trước. Trong đó, có hai câu hỏi mở, tạo cơ hội cho đối tượng có thể liệt kê những khó khăn họ gặp phải khi làm bài kiểm tra listening.
