Bộ phim này không như các tác phẩm của Makoto trước đó,nó chẳng có bất kỳ yếu tố kỳ ảo hay khoa học viễn tưởng nào. Thay vào đó nó sẽ trình bày một cách chân thật về thế giới thực với nhiều góc độ khác nhau. Phim cho thấy nhiều mặt của cuộc sống luôn đấu tranh và cùng tồn tại với nhau như thời gian, không gian, con người và tình yêu. Tựa 5cm/s, nó không chỉ là vận tốc của những cánh hoa anh đào rơi mà nó còn ẩn dụ cho con người, liên tưởng đến cuộc sống chậm rãi nơi mọi người luôn gắn kết với nhau, là vận tốc khi chúng ta lặng lẽ bước qua đời nhau, đánh mất bao cảm xúc thiết tha nhất của tình yêu. Bộ phim đã thực hiện hiệu ứng âm thanh một cách hoàn hảo, đặc biệt là tiếng cung tên trong các cảnh ở phần hai. Nhưng hình ảnh của bộ phim khá nhỏ đã dẫn đến việc hình ảnh bị nhiễu và khá sần sùi. Vì có khá nhiều màu tươi nên mỗi lần xuất hiện chúng lại làm nổi bật việc hình bị nhiễu.
