Du lịch là đi để vui chơi, giải trí hoặc nhằm mục đích kinh doanh; là việc thực hiện chuyến đi khỏi nơi cư trú, có tiêu tiền, có lưu trú qua đêm và có sự trở về. Mục đích của chuyến đi là giải trí, nghỉ dưỡng, thăm thân nhân, công tác, hội nghị khách hàng hay du lịch khen thưởng, hoặc nhằm mục đích kinh doanh. Các Tổ chức Du lịch Thế giới định nghĩa khách du lịch như những người "đi du lịch đến và ở lại ở những nơi bên ngoài nơi cư trú thường xuyên của họ trong hơn 24 giờ và không quá một năm liên tiếp cho giải trí, kinh doanh và các mục đích khác không liên đến những nhân viên hướng dẫn viên du lịch của tổ chức thực hiện việc du lịch đó.
