Trường được thành lập ngày 04 tháng 4 năm 1992, tiền thân là Trường phổ thông cấp 2 chuyên và trường Phổ thông bán công Phúc Yên B. Những năm đầu mới thành lập, khối cấp 2 có 220 học sinh được chia theo 6 lớp còn khối cấp 3 lại ít hơn rất nhiều, chỉ có 38 học sinh, phân trong một lớp. Cho đến nay, sau 23 năm phát triển kể từ ngày thành lập, trường đã có được sự đầu tư hoàn toàn của Nhà nước, số học sinh cũng tăng dần, nay là học sinh. Cũng như bất cứ ngôi trường nào khác, trong quá trình phát triển, trường đã gặp không ít khó khăn. Thời gian đầu, điều kiện về cơ sở vật chất rất hạn chế. Đến nay, Trường tuy đã được xây dựng khang trang hơn, trang thiết bị được chú trọng nhưng vẫn chưa đáp ứng yêu cầu đổi mới của ngành Giáo dục – Đào tạo. Phương pháp dạy học và sử dụng trang thiết bị cũng chưa thật sự tốt nhất. Nhiều môn có những hạn chế nhất định, đặc biệt là những môn học phải phụ thuộc vào thiết bị như Tin học, Vật Lý, Hóa học. Ban đầu việc sử dụng công nghệ thông tin còn chưa linh hoạt, dẫn đến ảnh hưởng trong công tác dạy và học. Thế nhưng, bên cạnh khó khăn, những điều kiện thuận lợi của trường cũng không ít. Trường luôn có truyền thống dạy tốt học tốt. Với đội ngũ cán bộ giáo viên có chuyên môn vững vàng, học sinh được tuyển chọn trên toàn Thị xã, cùng với đó là sự quan tâm, đầu tư kịp thời của các cấp lãnh đạo, và quan trọng nhất, là tinh thần học tập không ngừng nghỉ, vượt qua các khó khăn của cơ sở vật chất, trường đã có rất nhiều thành tích ấn tượng trong nhiều năm qua: Trường liên tục đạt danh hiệu trường tiên tiến xuất sắc cùng nhiều danh hiệu cao quý được Nhà nước trao tăng. Việc thực hiện quy chế chuyên môn như soạn, giảng, chấm trả bài và dự giờ đã thành nề nếp ở trường. Nhiều thầy cô đã nhiều năm phụ trách bồi dưỡng học sinh giỏi như cô Nguyễn Ánh Nguyệt, cô Trần Hải Vân, cô Lê Thị Tâm, cô Vũ Bích Thảo, cô Phạm Thị Minh Phương, cô Nguyễn Thị Ánh, cô Vương Thị Sáu,… Nhà trường đã có nhiều thầy cô tham gia và giành giải cao trong các cuộc thi giáo viên dạy giỏi như cô Nguyễn Thị Thanh Huyền với giải Nhì cấp Tỉnh môn toán, thầy Lê Ngọc Đông đạt giải Nhất cấp Thị xã môn vật lí,…Thầy Bí thư chi đoàn Nguyễn Thành Công và cô Tổng phụ trách đội Đỗ Hoài Phương luôn nêu cao vai trò tiên phong của mình trong các hoạt động tập thể của đoàn đội. Các buổi văn nghệ, thể dục thể thao chào mừng những ngày kỉ niệm như 20-11, 26-3, 22-12 của trường luôn được tổ chức một cách sôi động, náo nhiệt, là nơi để học sinh thể hiện tài năng của mình nhưng cũng không kém phần ý nghĩa.

Năm học nào nhà trường cũng có nhiều học sinh đạt giải qua các kì thi của phòng Giáo dục-Đào tạo thị xã Phúc Yên và Sở Giáo dục-Đào tạo tỉnh Vĩnh Phúc tổ chức như: Anh Nguyễn Khánh Việt (lớp 12) đạt giải Nhất Hội thi Tin học trẻ không chuyên Tỉnh Vĩnh Phúc năm học 2014-2015, bạn Nguyễn Anh Dũng và bạn Đào Trúc Lâm đạt huy chương vàng thi giải toán bằng tiếng Anh qua mạng toàn quốc năm học 2014-2015,… Bên cạnh những thành tích về văn hóa, hoạt động thể dục thể thao của trường cũng rất sôi nổi, tiêu biểu là các bạn: Vũ Quế Lâm-Nguyễn Hoàng Hải đạt huy chương bạc môn cầu lông Hội khỏe phù đổng tỉnh Vĩnh Phúc lần thứ IX, em Trần Trung Hiếu đạt huy chương vàng môn cờ vua cũng của đại hội,…Các em sẽ tiếp tục dự thi quốc gia vào tháng 3 tới đây. Đó đều là những thành tích đáng tự hào của thầy và trò trường ta, là kết quả của quá trình phấn đấu học tập không ngừng nghỉ của các học sinh và sự tận tâm của các thầy cô giáo, đồng thời cũng là nhờ có sự quan tâm giúp đỡ của các bậc phụ huynh các học sinh theo học trong nhà trường.
