Gender and value chains

In many agricultural value chains, women can face more difficult conditions than men. For example, in fruit and vegetable export chains, women are often hired as temporary or casual workers, while permanent workers are usually men. In Kenya’s fruit and vegetable export businesses for example, women occupy 80% of the positions in packing, labelling and barcoding produce. Women workers usually receive lower wages than men.
