Tình hình sản xuất:
Hoa cắt cành các loại là một trong những điểm mạnh của các nhà xuất khẩu hoa Việt Nam trong những năm gần đây đã thu được một lượng ngoại tệ đáng kể cho quốc gia.
Mở rộng diện tích sản xuất trồng hoa của cả nước đạt 8000 ha với sản lượng 4,5 tỷ cành trong đó mục tiêu xuất khẩu 1 tỉ cành hoa, trị giá trên 60 triệu USD vào năm 2010, tương đương với Hà Lan.
Trong đó Đà Lạt là nơi sản xuất hoa lớn nhất cả nước.
Hiện nay, cả nước có khoảng 4.000 ha diện tích sản xuất hoa cắt cành với sản lượng khoảng 3 tỷ cành hoa.

Sản xuất hoa cắt cành ở nước ta hiện nay tập trung xung quanh một số đô thị lớn. Ở Hà Nội và vùng lân cận có trên 1.000 ha trong đó vùng hoa Tây Tựu- Từ Liêm- Hà Nội với diện tích trồng hoa đạt 330 ha chủ yếu là hoa hồng, cúc, đào, lay ơn, cẩm chướng. Ở Hải Phòng có 300 ha. vùng trồng hoa hàng hóa Trung du miền núi phía Bắc với diện tích gần 136ha gồm: vùng trồng hoa Lao Cai; vùng trồng hoa Hoành Bồ- Quảng Ninh... Khu vực duyên hải Miền Trung mới bắt đầu sản xuất hoa cắt cành, chủ yếu phục vụ thị trường tại chỗ. Vùng trồng hoa tập trung tp Hồ Chí Minh với diện tích 700ha, các tỉnh Nam Bộ… là nơi sản xuất hoa và cây cảnh đáng kể nhưng chủ yếu là các loại hoa nhiệt đới. Riêng tỉnh Lâm Đồng có diện tích hoa cắt cành trên 1.100 ha với sản lượng không dưới 800 triệu cành mỗi năm. Với khả năng sản xuất quanh năm, Lâm Đồng có thể được coi là trung tâm sản xuất hoa cắt cành lớn nhất cả nước.

Tại các vùng trồng hoa tập trung này, hoa hồng và hoa cúc vẫn là hai loại hoa cắt chủ đạo, với đa dạng chủng loại và phẩm cấp, từ hoa phục vụ trang trí hàng ngày, tặng trong dịp lễ tết, hoa cúng, hoa khuôn viên cho đến các loại hoa xuất khẩu cao cấp. Tại vùng trồng hoa Tây Tựu-Từ Liêm-Hà Nội, hoa hồng và hoa cúc là hai loại hoa có diện tích trồng và sản lượng cao nhất. Hoa hồng cho thu hoạch quanh năm và tạo thu nhập thường xuyên. Hoa cúc đứng hàng thứ hai với chu kỳ 3 tháng một lần cho thu hoạch. Hoa cúc của vùng không chỉ được tiêu thụ tại các thị trường phía Bắc mà đang được đưa dần vào thị trường phía Nam và xuất khẩu sang Nhật Bản,Đài Loan. Hoa cúc có tới 40 loại khác nhau, chia thành 3 nhóm lớn và cúc đại đóa màu vàng anh, tím, cúc giống nhỏ và cúc có nhóm tia có muỗng. Hoa hồng cũng có tới trên 15 loại với chất lượng nổi trội. Hoa hồng Đà Lạt không chỉ được đánh giá cao bởi người tiêu dùng Việt Nam mà còn bởi cả các bạn hàng thế giới với ưu điểm hoa to, cành thẳng, bền, thơm, sinh trưởng và phát triển tốt, khả năng kháng bệnh cao… Tuy nhiên, các thị trường trên đây đều là những thị trường khó tính với những yêu cầu về chất lượng, mẫu mã và an toàn thực vật rất cao. Các tiêu chuẩn về hàm lượng thuốc trừ sâu, thuốc bảo vệ, bảo quản thực vật được đặt lên hàng đầu. Bên cạnh đó, để có thể thâm nhập các thị trường này, hoa Việt Nam còn phải cạnh tranh về hình thức, giá cả và độ tươi lâu.
