Ngày nay, không có sự tiến bộ kinh tế xã hội nào không gắn liền với tiến bộ khoa học công nghệ trên thế giới. Trong vài thập kỷ trở lại đây, trình độ phát triển của khoa học kỹ thuật đã thúc đẩy mạnh mẽ sự tăng trưởng và phát triển kinh tế. Tiến bộ khoa học kỹ thuật đã tạo ra những bước đột phá quan trọng trong hầu hết các lĩnh vực mới: Tự động hoá, điện tử, tin học, công nghệ thông tin, trí tuệ nhân tạo, robot... đã tại ra những thay đổi to lớn trong sản xuất cho phép rút ngắn chu trình sản xuất, tiết kiệm nguyên vật liệu nâng cao năng suất lao động và chất lượng sản phẩm.

Bên cạnh đó, sự phát triển của khoa học kỹ thuật cũng đặt ra những thách thức không nhỏ cho các doanh nghiệp trong việc quản lý, khai thác và vận hành công nghệ có hiệu quả cao. Bởi vì, cùng với sự phát triển của khoa học kỹ thuật thì thời gian để chếtạo công nghệ mới thay thế công nghệ cũ dần dần được rút ngắn lại. Sự ra đời của một công nghệ mới thường đồng nghĩa với chất lượng sản phẩm cao hơn, hoàn thiện hơn. Bên cạnh đó, đào tạo nhân lực để thích ứng với sự thay đổi liên tục của khoa học công nghệ không thể ngày một ngày hai mà phải có thời gian. Đây cũng là những khó khăn của các doanh nghiệp Việt Nam trong khi nguồn kinh phí cho đào tạo, bồi dưỡng không nhiều.
