Thực tế quan sát việc học tiếng Anh của sinh viên cho thấy phần lớn sinh viên chưa có cách học hiệu quả:
- Soạn bài: sinh viên chủ yếu soạn nghĩa từ vựng, bỏ qua phần phát âm, cấu trúc và chưa có thói quen chuẩn bị các ý tưởng cho các tình huống cũng như các chủ đề nói, do đó ở lớp sinh viên không thể đáp ứng được ngay các yêu cầu của giáo viên, hiệu quả thực hành không cao.
- Học từ vựng: sinh viên thường có thói quen học từ vựng theo kiểu học từ đơn lẻ, viết đi viết lại từ đó nhiều lần mà chưa có thói quen hoặc không biết cách học từ trong ngữ cảnh hay trong cách kết hợp với các từ khác. Cách học này mất nhiều thời gian mà hiệu quả nhớ từ rất hạn chế. Mặt khác, sinh viên lại không biết cách sử dụng từ cũng như sắp xếp từ theo một trật tự logic.
