Các nhà nghiên cứu tại Đại học Queensland đã tiến hành nghiên cứu những người sử dụng Facebook "bị động" (chỉ theo dõi bạn bè, không đăng tải nội dung) và những người sử dụng Facebook bị "xa lánh" (không được trả lời bình luận) để chỉ ra rằng: Quá trình liên lạc qua Facebook sẽ gây ảnh hưởng tiêu cực tới cách nhìn cuộc đời, khiến người dùng cô đơn và tự ti hơn.

Trong nghiên cứu thứ nhất, đội nghiên cứu do Tiến sĩ Stephanie Tobin lãnh đạo đã theo dõi hai nhóm người dùng độc lập: Một nhóm thường xuyên đăng tải câu trạng thái, ảnh chụp… lên Facebook và một nhóm chỉ theo dõi trạng thái từ bạn bè, không đăng tải các nội dung của riêng mình. Kết quả cho thấy nhóm theo dõi bị động sẽ có cảm giác tồi tệ hơn nhóm chủ động giao tiếp trên Facebook.

Dùng Facebook nhiều khiến bạn thêm cô đơn và tiêu cực

Trong nghiên cứu thứ hai, các nhà nghiên cứu tập trung vào một nhóm người dùng Facebook khép kín. Trong nhóm này, những người tham gia được khuyến khích bình luận về các bài viết của những người dùng khác. Đội nghiên cứu bí mật dàn cảnh để một nửa trong số những người tham gia bị người khác "xa lánh" và không trả lời bình luận của họ.

Kết quả của cả hai nghiên cứu cho thấy sự tự tin và cách nhìn nhận giá trị bản thân của tất cả những người dùng thuộc nhóm "yêu lặng theo dõi" và nhóm "bị xa lánh" đều bị ảnh hưởng rất tiêu cực.

Cả những người dùng "yên lặng" lẫn người dùng "bị xa lánh" đều có cảm giác xa cách, cảm giác "vô hình" và cảm thấy giá trị bản thân bị giảm sút. Những người "bị xa lánh" trở nên tự ti và kém tự chủ hơn rất nhiều.

Theo nghiên cứu này, việc được người khác chủ động tham gia vào giao tiếp trên Facebook có ý nghĩa rất quan trọng trong việc tạo ra cảm giác cộng đồng đối với người dùng mạng xã hội. Nói cách khác, con người đang dần bị lệ thuộc nhiều vào Facebook hơn.
