Ngày 23-8-2012, Đại sứ quán Australia tại Việt Nam ra thông báo về một chương trình hợp tác mới với sáu tổ chức phi lợi nhuận quốc tế nhằm giúp các cộng đồng dân cư của Việt Nam đối phó với biến đổi khí hậu. Với khoản viện trợ 15 triệu đôla Australia trong thời hạn 2,5 năm, hỗ trợ của Australia sẽ giúp các cộng đồng ứng phó với tác động của biến đổi khí hậu và giúp giảm phát thải gây hiệu ứng nhà kính.

“Australia và các đối tác của chúng tôi sẽ giúp giảm thiểu các rủi ro thiên tai, tăng cường an ninh lương thực và nguồn nước cho khoảng 500.000 người thuộc đối tượng dễ bị tổn thương nhất” - tân Đại sứ đặc mệnh toàn quyền Australia tại Việt Nam, ngài Hugh Borrowman cho biết.

Việt Nam là một trong những nước dễ bị tổn thương nhất bởi biến đổi khí hậu, đặc biệt là tại khu vực Đồng bằng Sông Cửu Long, nơi hiện tượng nước biển dâng, xâm nhiễm mặn và lụt lội đang ảnh hưởng đến các cộng đồng dân cư bản địa.

Chương trình hỗ trợ của Australia tại Việt Nam sẽ giúp tăng cường năng lực cho các cán bộ quản lý cũng như nông dân trồng lúa nhằm giảm phát thải gây hiệu ứng nhà kính, tăng sản lượng lúa gạo ở Đồng Bằng Sông Cửu Long và khu vực miền Trung. Đồng thời, từ kinh nghiệm và kiến thức địa phương,
chương trình cũng xác định các bước đi thực tiễn trong việc thích ứng với biến đổi khí hậu.

On 23-8-2011, the Australian Embassy in Vietnam announced a new cooperation programme with six nonprofit organizations designed to help the international community of Vietnam cope with climate change. At the same time, from the experience and local knowledge, the program also identifies practical steps to take in adapting to climate change.
