Ngày thiết lập quan hệ ngoại giao: 21/9/1973

Sau năm 1975, Đại sứ quán được mở tại Thủ đô mỗi nước; hai bên ký thỏa thuận về việc Chính phủ Nhật Bản bồi thường chiến tranh với danh nghĩa viện trợ không hoàn lại đối với Việt Nam.

Giai đoạn 1979-1991: Do vấn đề Căm-pu-chia, Nhật Bản đông kết các khoản viện trợ đã thỏa thuận, quan hệ chính trị hạn chế.

Năm 1992, Nhật Bản quyết định mở lại viện trợ cho Việt Nam. Từ đó đến nay, các mối quan hệ kinh tế, chính trị, giao lưu văn hóa… được mở rộng; sự hiểu biết và tin cậy giữa hai nước từng bước được tăng lên. Hiện Nhật Bản là đối tác kinh tế quan trọng hàng đầu của Việt Nam về ODA, đầu tư và thương mại…

Năm 1993, Thủ tướng Võ Văn Kiệt thăm chính thức Nhật Bản; sau đó, Thủ tướng Phan Văn Khải (4/1999, 6/2001, 4/2003, 12/2003, 6/2004), Thủ tướng Nguyễn Tấn Dũng (10/2006, 5/2009, 11/2009, 10/2011, 4/2012, 7/2015)

Năm 1994, Thủ tướng Nhật Bản Murayama-Thủ tướng Nhật Bản đầu tiên thăm Việt Nam. Tiếp đó lần lượt các Thủ tướng Hashimoto (1/1997), Thủ tướng Obuchi (12/1998), Thủ tướng Koizumi (4/2002 và 10/2005), Thủ tướng Shinzo Abe (11/2006 và 1/2013) và Thủ tướng Naoto Kan (10/2010) thăm Việt Nam. Hoàng thái tử Nhật Bản (2/2009), Hoàng tử Nhật Bản (6/1999 và 8/2002) đã thăm Việt Nam.

Năm 1995, Tổng Bí thư Đỗ Mười, Tổng bí thư Việt Nam đầu tiên thăm chính thức Nhật Bản; tiếp theo Tổng Bí thư Nông Đức Mạnh thăm năm 2002 và 2009.

Từ năm 2002 đến nay, quan hệ hai nước không ngừng được củng cố và phát triển, khuôn khổ quan hệ được thiết lập:

Tháng 4 năm 2002: Nhân chuyến thăm Việt Nam của Thủ tướng Koizumi, hai nước thiết lập quan hệ “Đối tác tin cậy, ổn định lâu dài”.

Tháng 7 năm 2004: Tuyên bố chung giữa hai Bộ trưởng Ngoại giao xác định “Vươn tới tầm cao mới của quan hệ đối tác bền vững”.

Tháng 11 năm 2006: Trong chuyến thăm chính thức Việt Nam của Thủ tướng Shinzo Abe, hai bên ra Tuyên bố chung xác định “Hướng tới đối tác chiến lược vì hòa bình và phồn vinh ở Châu Á”.

Năm 2007: Nhân chuyến thăm cấp nhà nước lần đầu tiên của Chủ tịch nước Nguyễn Minh Triết tháng 11/2007, Chủ tịch nước Nguyễn Minh Triết và Thủ tướng Nhật Bản Yasuo Fukuda đã ký Tuyên bố chung “Làm sâu sắc hơn quan hệ Việt Nam và Nhật Bản” và “Chương trình hợp tác hướng tới quan hệ đối tác chiến lược”.

Năm 2009: Nhân chuyến thăm chính thức Nhật Bản của Tổng bí thư Nông Đức Manh, Tổng bí thư Nông Đức Mạnh và Thủ tướng Aso Taro đã ký Tuyên bố chung về “Quan hệ đối tác chiến lược vì hòa bình và phồn vinh ở Châu Á” nhất trí đưa quan hệ hai nước lên tầm đối tác chiến lược. Nhật Bản là nước G7 đầu tiên thiết lập quan hệ đối tác chiến lược với Việt Nam (tiếp theo là Anh năm 2010, Đức năm 2011).

Tháng 10/2010, nhân chuyến thăm Việt Nam của Thủ tướng Nhật Bản Naoto Kan, Thủ tướng hai nước đã ký Tuyên bố chung Việt Nam-Nhật Bản về phát triển toàn diện quan hệ đối tác chiến lược vì hòa bình và phồn vinh ở Châu Á.

Tháng 10/2011, trong chuyến thăm Nhật Bản của Thủ tướng Nguyễn Tấn Dũng và Thủ tướng Noda đã ký Tuyên bố chung “triển khai hành động trong khuôn khổ quan hệ đối tác chiến lược vì hòa bình và phồn vinh ở Châu Á giữa Việt Nam và Nhật Bản”.

Tháng 3/2014, Chủ tịch nước Trương Tấn Sang thăm cấp nhà nước tới Nhật Bản; Hai bên ra Tuyên bố chung Việt Nam – Nhật Bản về quan hệ Đối tác chiến lược sâu rộng vì hòa bình và phồn vinh ở Châu Á.
