Việt Nam đã luôn công nhận tầm quan trọng của việc tăng cường tình hữu nghị cũng như sự hợp tác với Nhật Bản và chuyển hướng tới mối quan hệ hợp tác chiến lược với nền hoà bình và thịnh vượng được đẩy mạnh về sau ở châu Á.
Chủ tịch nước Nguyễn Minh Triết đã đưa ra khẳng định trên trong khi tiếp cựu thủ tướng Nhật Bản Ysasuo Fukuda tại Hà Nội vào ngày 15 tháng 12, người đã tham gia vào diễn đàn châu Á của những người trong nghị viện về dân số và phát triển ở Việt nam.
