Tổng kim ngạch xuất nhập khẩu hàng hoá trong năm 2007 đạt 111,2 tỷ USD, tăng 31,3% so với năm 2006, trong đó xuất khẩu đạt 48,56 tỷ USD, tăng 21,9% so với năm trước, vượt 3,8% kế hoạch năm và nhập khẩu là 62,7 tỷ USD, tăng xấp xỉ 40%, cao gấp gần 2 lần tốc độ tăng xuất khẩu.
Khoảng cách rất lớn về tốc độ tăng của nhập khẩu so với xuất khẩu đã đẩy nhập siêu lên một mức cao nhất từ trước đến nay (14,12 tỷ USD), gấp 2,8 lần của nhập siêu năm 2006 (là 5,06 tỷ USD) và gấp 12,4 lần của nhập siêu năm 2001 (là 1,12 tỷ USD).
Dầu thô: trong tháng 12 xuất khẩu đạt 1,25 triệu tấn, giảm 9,7% so với tháng trước, nâng tổng lượng dầu thô xuất khẩu cả năm 2007 lên 15,06 triệu tấn, giảm 8,3% so với năm 2006.

Xăng dầu nhập vào Việt Nam trong năm 2007 chủ yếu từ Singapore với hơn 6,7 triệu tấn, chiếm tới hơn 52,5% tổng lượng nhập khẩu mặt hàng này của cả nước, tiếp theo là Đài Loan: 2,7 triệu tấn, Trung Quốc: 725 nghìn tấn,…
Năm 2008
Tổng kim ngạch xuất nhập khẩu hàng hoá trong năm 2008 đạt 143,4 tỷ USD, tăng 28,9% so với năm 2007, trong đó xuất khẩu đạt 62,69 tỷ USD, tăng 29,1% so với năm trước, vượt 7% kế hoạch năm và nhập khẩu là 80,71 tỷ USD, tăng 28,8%, thấp hơn tốc độ tăng xuất khẩu.
Dầu thô: trong tháng 12 xuất khẩu đạt 1,46 triệu tấn, tăng 35,6% so với tháng trước, nâng tổng lượng dầu thô xuất khẩu cả năm 2008 lên 13,75 triệu tấn, giảm 8,7% so với năm 2007. Mặc dù lượng giảm nhưng do giá bình quân tăng 33,6% nên kim ngạch xuất khẩu dầu thô cả năm 2008 đạt 10,36 triệu USD, tăng 22% so với năm 2007.
Xăng dầu: trong tháng nhập khẩu gần 1,17 triệu tấn, tăng 44,8% so với tháng 11 và trị giá là 443,7 triệu USD. Tính đến hết tháng 12 năm 2008, tổng lượng xăng dầu nhập vào Việt Nam là 12,96 triệu tấn, tăng nhẹ (0,9%) so với năm 2007 và lượng nhập khẩu chỉ đạt 89,4% mức kế hoạch năm.
Tuy nhiên, do những tháng đầu năm khi giá cao, chúng ta nhập khẩu nhiều nên giá nhập khẩu bình quân mặt hàng này cả năm tăng 41%, trị giá lên tới 10,97 tỷ USD, tăng 42,2% so với năm 2007.
Năm 2009
tổng kim ngạch xuất nhập khẩu cả nước năm 2009 là 127,05 tỷ USD, giảm 11,4% so với năm 2008, cán cân thương mại hàng hoá thâm hụt 12,85 tỷ USD, bằng 22,6% xuất khẩu.

tổng kim ngạch xuất nhập khẩu cả nước năm 2012 đạt gần 228,37 tỷ USD, tăng 12,1% so với năm 2011, trong đó xuất khẩu đạt 114,57 tỷ USD, tăng 18,2% và nhập khẩu là 113,79 tỷ USD, tăng 6,6%. Cán cân thương mại hàng hoá cả nước xuất siêu 780 triệu USD (trong khi năm 2011 nhập siêu 9,84 tỷ USD).

Trong năm 2013, tổng lượng xăng dầu nhập khẩu của cả nước là 7,37 triệu tấn, giảm 19,9% so với năm 2012 với trị giá hơn 6,98 tỷ USD, giảm 22%. So với năm 2012, trị giá nhập khẩu xăng dầu các loại giảm gần 1,98 tỷ USD, trong đó phần giảm do giá giảm là 193 triệu USD và phần giảm do lượng giảm là 1,78 tỷ USD.

Dầu thô: trong tháng lượng xuất khẩu là 867 nghìn tấn, tăng 23,5%, trị giá là 414 triệu USD, giảm 4,7% so với tháng trước. Tính đến hết tháng 12/2014, lượng dầu thô xuất khẩu của cả nước đạt 9,3 triệu tấn, tăng 10,5% và kim ngạch đạt 7,23 tỷ USD, giảm nhẹ 0,1% so với cùng kỳ năm trước.Đơn giá bình quân xuất khẩu dầu thô trong tháng 12 đã giảm sâu ở mức 478 USD/tấn (tương ứng 62 USD/thùng), là mức giá thấp nhất kể từ tháng 5/2009.
