The main reason behind the widespread adoption of herbicides in the industrially developedcountries was socialistic, through a reduction in the need for labor and theconcomitant release of people from farming [17]. Chemical weed control offeredseveral benefits to farmers by reducing weeds, enabling early planting, reducingthe need for soil tillage, and providing economic advantages through reduced cost ofproduction. However, it was not the only tool to manage weeds. The disadvantageassociated with herbicide techniques is the development of herbicide resistance inweeds. The wheat growers in the Indian states of Punjab and Haryana suffered a lotduring the late 1990s and early years of the last decade due to the development ofisoproturon resistance in Phalaris minor, a major weed of this region. The problempersisted until alternative herbicides to control this weed became available in themarket. The researchers developed and fine-tuned several other strategies to manageweeds to deal with various social, cultural, environmental, and economic issues. All those weed management strategies are typically grouped into five categories:preventive, cultural, mechanical (physical), biological, and chemical.
