Dệt may là một trong những ngành rất quan trọng, không chỉ đối với Việt Nam mà rất nhiều nước khác trên thế giới (thậm chí là nước phát triển như Hoa Kỳ). Bởi vì đây là ngành sử dụng rất nhiều nhân công, nếu ngành này bị suy yếu thì sẽ dẫn đến số lượng người thất nghiệp gia tăng. Chính vì tầm quan trọng như vậy nên trong quá trình đàm phán để Việt Nam gia nhập WTO, những điều kiện liên quan đến hàng dệt may được bàn rất kỹ.
