ốc bươu vàng, có nguồn gốc từ Nam Mỹ, sống trong các vùng đầm lầy. Ốc bươu vàng du nhập vào nước ta từ trước năm 1975. Loài ốc được xác định là ký chủ trung gian truyền bệnh sán phổi từ chuột sang người này đã xâm nhiễm vào đồng ruộng Việt Nam. Với điều kiện sinh thái phù hợp, chúng phát triển nhanh chóng, trở thành dịch hại trên nhiều loại cây trồng, đặc biệt là cây lúa, rau muống ở hầu hết mọi miền đất nước.
