Hoạt động phi thương mại: GDP chỉ quan tâm đến những hoạt động nào có thể tính bằng tiền nên những hoạt động từ thiện hay tình nguyện, những việc ta tự làm như giặt quần áo, sửa sang nhà cửa, những việc mà các bậc cha mẹ ở nhà vẫn làm cho con, những đóng góp tích cực vào chất lượng môi trường do ngành trồng rừng mang lại cho xã hội mà không được trả tiền … đây là các hoạt động cần thiết cho xã hội, nhưng không phải vì lý do thương mại nên không có giá cả, không được thông báo hay hạch toán vào GDP. Các hoạt động của các tổ chức nhân đạo, bảo vệ môi trường… chắc chắn có đóng góp vào sự phồn thịnh quốc gia nhưng do không được định giá và mua bán trên thị trường nên cũng không được tính vào GDP. Điều nguy hiểm là chính sách kinh tế- xã hội có thể bị méo mó nếu chỉ chú trọng hoạt động tính được bằng tiền để “ góp phần tăng GDP”.
