Là hình thức huy động vốn bằng việc xác nhận nghĩa vụ trả nợ giữa ngân hàng với các cá nhân, tổ chức sở hữu giấy tờ có giá trong một thời hạn, điều kiện trả lãi và các điều kiện khác nhất định. Căn cứ vào thời hạn, giấy tờ có giá (GTCG) bao gồm:
GTCG ngắn hạn: là loại giấy tờ có giá kỳ hạn dưới 12 tháng: Kỳ phiếu, Tín phiếu, Chứng chỉ tiền gửi ngắn hạn và các giấy tờ có giá ngắn hạn khác.
GTCG dài hạn: là loại giấy tờ có giá kỳ hạn từ 12 tháng trở lên: Chứng chỉ tiền gửi dài hạn, Trái phiếu và các giấy tờ có giá dài hạn khác.
