(1) Chỉ khả năng, năng lực trong quá khứ (past ability):
I never could play the banjo (Tr­uớc đây, tôi không biết chơi đàn bằng giô).
(2) Sự cho phép ở hiện tại hoặc t­ương lai (present or future permission):
Could I smoke in here? (Tôi hút thuốc ở đây đuợc chứ?)
(3) Chỉ khả năng có thể xảy ra kèm theo hoặc năng lực trong điều kiện không có trong thực tại (contingent possibility or ability in unreal conditions)
If We had more money, we could buy a car.
(Nếu chúng tôi có nhiều tiền hơn thì chúng tôi có thể mua một chiếc xe hơi).
Cần l­ưu ý:
a. ý nghĩa “năng lực” có thể dẫn đến hàm nghĩa “tự nguyện” (willingness), đặc biệt là trong ngôn ngữ nói (spoken English).
