Khi có kết quả thi vòng huyện, huyện tôi thường chọn đội tuyển khoảng từ 17 - 20 em học sinh có số điểm cao từ trên xuống phân theo giải loại tiếp để tìm được đội tuyển chính thức là 10 em để tổ chức thành đội tuyển, ôn luyện tham gia kì thi cấp tỉnh trong một thời gian nhất định (khoảng trên 3 tháng). Vậy với vòng này giáo viên được phân công đứng đội tuyển có nhiệm vụ ra đề và chấm chọn. Tôi phải đặt tinh thần trách nhiệm lên trên hết. Trước hết phải khách quan, công bằng với tất cả các em học sinh về dự thi, đề thi phải phân loại được học sinh có các mức độ từ dễ đến khó, đặc biệt là từ kiến thức cơ bản các em phải xử lí được đề, phát hiện được "cái bẫy" có tính gài gắn trong bài thi. Có làm được điều đó, với vai trò là giáo viên đứng đội tuyển mới có thể chắt lọc và tìm được học sinh có tố chất, có năng khiếu học môn Tiếng Anh...được học tốt hay chưa tốt ở trường cơ sở.
