Toluene là một chất dung môi thường được sử dụng để tạo nên sự mượt mà cho móng tay và giữ màu sơn được lâu. Nhưng nó có thể ảnh hưởng đến hệ thống thần kinh trung ương và gây tác hại đến khả năng sinh sản. Đây vốn là chất phụ gia trong xăng.

Formaldehyde được dùng để làm cứng móng tay và khử trùng dụng cụ chăm sóc móng. Tuy nhiên, đây cũng là một chất có khả năng gây ung thư.
