Thuật ngữ dịch thuật (translation)

Thuật ngữ dịch thuật (translation) có nội hàm rất rộng. Nó có nghĩa là một quá trình chuyển đổi văn bản ở ngôn ngữ gốc sang văn bản ở ngôn ngữ dịch. Nhưng ở ngôn cảnh khác nó lại chỉ một sản phẩm của quá trình nói trên. Đôi khi thuật ngữ này còn được dùng với ý nghĩa bao trùm cả quá trình chuyển dịch văn bản ở dạng nói được gọi là phiên dịch (interpreting). Nó có thể ám chỉ quá trình dịch thuật của con người nhưng có khi nó cũng bao hàm quá trình dịch của máy (dịch máy). Hiện tại có rất nhiều định nghĩa về dịch thuật (con số có thể đến hàng trăm), mỗi định nghĩa đều làm sáng tỏ một vài khía cạnh quan trọng của khái niệm 'dịch thuật' song gần như chưa có một định nghĩa đơn lẻ nào bao hàm được hết đặc điểm phức tạp, đa dạng và rất khó nắm bắt của khái niệm này. (Điều này giải thích vì sao các nhà lý luận dịch hiện nay có xu hướng coi nghiên cứu dịch thuật là một khoa học liên ngành hơn là một phân ngành nghiên cứu độc lập). Vấn đề sẽ rất phức tạp nếu đi sâu vào bàn luận sự hợp lý hay đúng sai của các định nghĩa khác nhau về dịch thuật và đây cũng không thật sự là việc làm cần thiết. Tuy vậy để tiện cho việc nhìn nhận một cách tương đối rành mạch về đối tượng nghiên cứu ta có thể lấy một quan điểm được nhiều người thừa nhận làm cơ sở. Jakobson (1959/2000) trong chuyên luận nổi tiếng "On lingistic aspects of translation"(về các bình diện ngôn ngữ học của dịch thuật) đã chỉ ra ba loại hình dịch thuật:
1) Dịch nội ngôn (Intralingual translation) là kiểu dịch trong cùng một ngôn ngữ gồm diễn đạt lại hoặc diễn giải (rewording and paraphrasing).
2) Dịch liên ngôn (Interlingual translation) là kiểu dịch từ một ngôn ngữ sang ngôn ngữ khác.
3) Dịch liên ký hiệu (Intersemiotic translation) là sự chuyển dịch ký hiệu ngôn ngữ sang ký hiệu phi ngôn ngữ như từ văn bản ngôn ngữ sang điện ảnh.
