Tục tổ chức lễ mừng thọ cho người cao tuổi đã có từ rất lâu đời. Để bày tỏ lòng hiếu thảo của con cháu đối với ông bà, cha mẹ thì người xưa đã tạo ra phong tục tổ chức lễ mừng thọ này. Từ thời nhà Nguyễn đã xuất hiện lễ mừng thọ này nhưng đến thời Minh Mạng thứ 8 thì mức độ tuổi được tổ chức lễ mừng thọ được rút xuống từ tuổi 60. Từ đó đến nay, lễ mừng thọ luôn được coi là một nét đẹp truyền thống trong văn hoá của người dân Việt Nam.
