Nước,không khí và các chất dinh dưỡng là những yếu tố môi trường thiết yếu cho muôn loài động, thực vật nói chung cũng như con người nói riêng.
Trong những thập niên gần đây, sự bùng nổ dân số cùng với tốc độ đô thị hóa , công nghiệp hóa nhanh chóng đã tạo ra một sức ép lớn tới môi trường sống, đặc biệt là với nguồn nước thải sinh hoạt ngày càng trở nên thiếu hụt và ô nhiễm.
