Trung tâm Giao dịch Chứng khoán Việt Nam (viết tắt là STC),đặt tại Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh đã chính thức khánh thành vào ngày 20/7/2000, và bắt đầu giao dịch vào ngày 28/7/2000. Ban đầu, có 2 đơn vị phát hành vốn cổ phần được niêm yết, Công ty Cổ phần Cơ điện lạnh (REE) và Công ty Cổ phần Cáp và Vật liệu Viễn thông (SACOM).
Cũng trong ngày này, 20 cổ phiếu khác cũng được niêm yết với số vốn hoá thị trường hiện nay là 239 triệu đô la Mỹ.
Trung tâm Giao dịch Chứng khoán Việt Nam cũng là một cơ chế chính thức mà qua đó trái phiếu mới của chính phủ được phát hành, và chức năng của nó như một thị trường thứ cấp dành cho một số lượng trái phiếu hiện tại.
Cũng trong ngày này, có đến 120 trái phiếu được niêm yết với tổng số vốn hoá thị trường là 866 triệu đô la Mỹ. Tất cả số chứng khoán được giao dịch tại Trung tâm Giao dịch Chứng khoán Việt Nam đều được thanh toán bằng đồng Việt Nam.
Mệnh giá được chuẩn hoá là 10.000 Việt Nam đồng đối với cổ phần và 100.000 Việt Nam đồng đối với trái phiếu. Quá trình giao dịch được tiến hành hàng ngày với 2 khớp lệnh trong phiên từ 9 giờ đến 11 giờ sáng.
