Một cuộc thi kéo co có 2 đội, số lượng người đều nhau. 2 đội sẽ nắm vào một sợi dây thừng, ở điểm giữa của dây được đánh dấu bằng một dây lụa đỏ làm mốc. Khi hiệu lệnh vang lên, các thành viên của mỗi đội chơi nắm chặt hai tay vào dây, đội nào kéo điểm đánh dấu sang phía mình là đội đó thắng cuộc. Mỗi cuộc thi đấu gồm 3 hiệp, đội nào thắng liên tiếp 2 hiệp thì đội đó giành phần thắng, không cần thi đấu hiệp thứ 3. Mỗi hiệp thường không kéo dài quá 2 phút, nên đòi hỏi các thành viên của các đội chơi phải rất nỗ lực.
