Hiện nay, công tác thu gom, quản lý và xử lý chất thải rắn sinh hoạt đã và đang diễn ra theo phương pháp truyền thống với toàn bộ lượng chất thải rắn được thu gom rồi được đưa về bãi chôn lấp hoặc xử lý tùy theo từng thành phần của chất thải rắn. Xuất phát từ tình hình thực tế, đề tài này được thực hiện nhằm phục vụ cho công tác quản lý và xử lý chất thải rắn sinh hoạt hiệu quả hơn và góp phần vào việc thu hồi lại các thành phần có khả năng tái sử dụng, tái chế đem lại lợi ích kinh tế - xã hội và môi trường góp phần bảo vệ môi trường.
Các kết quả chính bao gồm khối lượng và thành phần chất thải rắn sinh hoạt tại các hộ gia đình, hiện trạng quản lý rác thải sinh hoạt tại các hộ gia đình, đánh giá nhận thức của người dân về phân loại rác tại nguồn. Dựa vào các kết quả trên, bài báo đề xuất ba mô hình phân loại chất thải rắn sinh hoạt tại nguồn cho các hộ gia đình trên địa bàn phường Hiệp An bao gồm: hộ kinh doanh, hộ công nhân, viên chức và hộ nông nghiệp.Thông qua việc đề xuất mô hình, bài báo còn đề xuất các giải pháp nhằm tăng cường hiệu quả trong việc ứng dụng mô hình vào công tác quản lý chất thải rắn sinh hoạt.
