Hiện nay, dịch cúm A/H5N6 đã được phát hiện trên gia cầm ở nhiều nước như Trung Quốc, Lào, Đức, Thụy Điển, Hoa Kỳ. Tại Trung Quốc đã có người tử vong vì virus này.
Tại Việt Nam, virus cúm A/H5N6 đã được phát hiện tại một số tỉnh biên giới phía Bắc như Lạng Sơn, Lào Cai và một số tỉnh miền Trung như Hà Tĩnh, Quảng Trị và Quảng Ngãi.
Theo Cục Thú Y, Bộ NNPTNT, đến nay tổng số gà, vịt, chim trĩ chết do mắc cúm A/H5N6 là 2.013 con, tổng số gia cầm bị tiêu huỷ là gần 5.200 con.
