Cây Sầu đâu còn gọi là cây Neem có tên khoa học Azadirachta indica được du nhập vào Việt Nam từ lâu. Nó được trồng khá nhiều ở Ninh Thuận, Bình thuận và một số địa phương khác của Việt Nam từ Bắc vào Nam. Sầu đâu và một số loài trong họ Xoan đã được nghiên cứu hóa thực vật cho thấy chúng có chứa khá nhiều các lớp chất như tinh dầu, polyphenol, terpenoid, flavonoid, oligo-sacharid, sulfid hữu cơ, … với nhiều hoạt tính đáng lưu ý kháng viêm, chống ôxy hóa, giảm đường huyết và đặc biệt là các terpenoid có khả năng diệt côn trùng, ký sinh trùng (giun sán) được sử dụng rộng rãi trong nông nghiệp để bảo vệ thực vật. Việc sử dụng ngày càng nhiều hóa chất tổng hợp trong nông nghiệp bảo vệ mùa màng, tăng năng xuất cây trồng đang gây ô nhiễm môi trường nghiêm trọng. Do vậy, việc tìm kiếm các nguồn thuốc bảo vệ thực vật có nguồn gốc thiên nhiên thân thiện với môi trường là việc làm rất cần thiết và cấp bách đối với nền nông nghiệp Việt Nam hiện nay. Nghiên cứu hóa thực vật và can thiệp sinh hóa để cây Neem và một số loài họ Xoan tạo ra hàm lượng cao các terpenoid có tác dụng diệt côn trùng có thể trở thành một trong những giải pháp tốt cho nền nông nghiệp Việt Nam phát triển bền vững.
