Vùng có nhiều chè cổ thụ là Hà Giang và các tỉnh lân cận như Yên Bái, Lào Cai, Lai Châu. Năm 1924, Dupasquier đã tiến hành điều tra cây chè rừng phía Nam Trung Bộ - Việt Nam cũng có kết luận tương tự.
