Nghi thức này do thiền sư Thích Nhất Hạnh khởi xướng trong cuốn sách viết năm 1962. Một số địa phương có tục lệ riêng như ở Quy Nhơn thì dân chúng xếp thuyền giấy rồi thả ra biển để tưởng nhớ những ai ra khơi rồi mất tích như hồi thập niên 1980-90 với nạn thuyền nhân vượt biên.
