Newfoundland can be divided into three zones:. Newfoundland Highlands, the Western Upland and lowland region of The Newfoundland Highlands make up most of the western portion of the island. This area is the edge of the plateau, which rises abruptly on the western shore and sloping to the East. The elevation in this area reach altitudes of 814 m (2,671 ft) in the Lewis Hills in the Southwest. This area is also sometimes called the Long Range mountains. The Atlantic high region created most of the South and East of the island. The area is mostly a flat plateau or roll with an average elevation of approximately 300 m (1,000 ft). There are a number of rugged hills Southeast of the Avalon peninsula. Swamps, ponds, small lakes are very popular in this area. The Middle part carry the Center North of the island. Most of the area is flat or gently rolling, with almost all altitudes below 150 m (500 ft).
