Lý do McDonald’s đến nay chưa vào Việt Nam là vì chưa tìm được nguồn nguyên liệu tươi tại địa phương. Trang điện tử AmCham Vietnam cho biết một số vấn đề món burger "cheese quarter-pounder" truyền thống từ năm 1972 của McDonald’s không thể đủ hương vị nếu thiếu khoai tây chiên Pháp “McDonald’s French Fries”. Nhưng thuế nhập khẩu khoai tây đông lạnh từ Pháp quá cao và khoai tây Việt Nam lại không đáp ứng yêu cầu, từ độ dài đến độ ẩm. Thêm vào đó, vấn đề thuế và hạn chế tiền bản quyền khiến hình thức này kém hấp dẫn với chủ thương hiệu.
