Một trẻ em đã từng bị bạo hành thường sẽ có những biểu hiện tâm lý đặc trưng, dễ dàng đoán biết như: hay tỏ ra giận dữ, gắt gỏng, buồn chán, ăn ngủ bất thường hoặc hay bị ám ảnh là sẽ bị bỏ rơi, hay mơ ác mộng…

Đặc biệt, sau khi phải trải qua những trận bạo hành khủng khiếp về cả thể xác lẫn tinh thần, nhiều trẻ mắc phải chứng “Rối loạn và căng thẳng hậu chấn thương” (PTSD). Ước tính ở một quốc gia phát triển như Mỹ, có tới 5% dân số mắc phải chứng này, trong đó một lượng không nhỏ là trẻ em.


Ảnh hưởng, hậu quả mà nạn bạo hành trẻ em gây ra là vô cùng to lớn. Trải qua những trận bạo hành, các em nhỏ phải đối mặt với nhiều tổn thương về thể chất, như gãy xương sườn, tổn thương thần kinh vĩnh viễn, suy giảm sự phát triển não bộ…

Trong tương lai, những trẻ em ấy lớn lên và mang theo những di chứng suốt đời. Theo một nghiên cứu năm 2007, người lớn có tiền sử bị bạo hành hay lạm dụng khi còn nhỏ dễ mắc các chứng dị ứng, viêm khớp, hen suyễn, cao huyết áp…
Ở Mỹ, cứ 100.000 trẻ em thì có 2 em chết do bị bạo hành. Năm 2008, tổng số em nhỏ Mỹ qua đời vì nguyên nhân trên là 1.730 em. Ở góc nhìn tâm lý học, những trẻ em từng trải qua bạo hành bị ám ảnh và có xu hướng trở thành người “bạo hành trẻ em” khi lớn lên.

Một nghiên cứu năm 1988 còn chỉ ra rằng, trẻ em bị bạo hành có nguy cơ trở thành tội phạm giết người vị thành niên cao gấp 100 lần trẻ bình thường
