Lý‎ thuyết ngôn ngữ học Chomsky lấy trọng tâm là sự phân biệt giữa “cấu trúc bề mặt” và “cấu trúc bề sâu”. Mối quan hệ giữa hai loại cấu trúc này phản ánh các mối quan hệ thực sự giữa khái niệm và thực thể có liên quan. Sự phân bố bề mặt các đơn vị ngôn ngữ được chi phối bởi sự sắp xếp của các cấu trúc bề sâu. Nida (1969) dựa trên lý thuyết này để nghiên cứu quá trình dịch và đã chỉ ra 3 bước như sau:
1) Phân lập văn bản nguyên tác thành sự biểu hiện bề sâu, hoặc các “hạt nhân” ý nghĩa.
2) Chuyển dịch ý nghĩa từ ngôn ngữ gốc sang ngôn ngữ dịch ở cấp độ đơn giản về mặt cấu trúc.
3) Tạo ra cách diễn đạt tương đương về mặt phong cách và ý nghĩa ở ngôn ngữ dịch.
