Theo thống kê của EWT, chỉ trong 40 năm qua, lượng tê giác trên thế giới đã giảm tới 95%, chỉ còn 25.000 con trong tự nhiên. Nam Phi sở hữu tới hơn 70% quần thể tê giác trên toàn thế giới, nhưng riêng năm 2013, đã có ít nhất hơn 1.000 con tê giác bị thảm sát để đáp ứng nhu cầu tiêu thụ tại các quốc gia châu Á, trong đó có Việt Nam. Các nhà bảo tồn cho hay nạn thảm sát tê giác tại Nam Phi không có chiều hướng suy giảm mà thậm chí ngày càng khốc liệt hơn. Chỉ trong 8 tháng đầu năm nay đã có ít nhất gần 700 con tê giác bị giết hại.
