Mùa xuân năm 1941, John F. Kennedy tình nguyện gia nhập Lục quân Hoa Kỳ, nhưng bị từ chối vì những sang chấn ở lưng.[8] Hải quân Hoa Kỳ chấp nhận Kennedy vào tháng 9 năm ấy. Kennedy bị ném qua khỏi boong tàu, gây chấn thương vùng lưng vốn đã thương tật của ông.
