Hồng cầu lưới là tế bào tiền thân trực tiếp của hồng cầu, được sản sinh từ tủy xương. Hồng cầu lưới có tất cả tính chất của hồng cầu trưởng thành, nhưng kích thước lớn hơn và có những mảnh ARN sót lại của nhân.
Xét nghiệm đếm số lượng hồng cầu lưới được chỉ định trong các trường hợp thiếu máu bởi vì sự hiện diện của hồng cầu lưới ở máu ngoại vi phản ánh hoạt động sản xuất hồng cầu của tủy xương và là thông số quan trọng cho phép xác định nguyên nhân thiếu máu là tại tủy hay ngoài tủy ( ngoại biên).
