Phương pháp định tính có những đặc điểm riêng sau:
- Nghiên cứu định tính sử dụng nhiều phương pháp có tính tương tác và nhân văn. Trong phỏng vấn, người nghiên cứu có thể quan sát thái độ, hành vi cũng như tương tác với người trả lời.
- Nghiên cứu định tính tự hiện ra chứ không phải được hình dung trước một cách chặt chẽ. Một số khía cạnh mới có thể xuất hiện trong quá trình nghiên cứu định tính. Từ đó, nghiên cứu có thể tìm ra những điểm mới vượt ngoài sự dự định.
- Nghiên cứu định tính về cơ bản có tính chất diễn giải. Điều này có nghĩa là nhà nghiên cứu thực hiện việc lý giải dữ liệu. Lý giải dữ liệu bao gồm việc mô tả một cá nhân hay bối cảnh, phân tích dữ liệu thành các chủ đề hay chủng loại, và cuối cùng diễn giải hay rút ra kết luận về ý nghĩa của nó một cách cá nhân và lý thuyết, phát biểu bài học rút ra, và đặt ra những câu hỏi sâu xa hơn.
- Nghiên cứu định tính sử dụng lập luận phức hợp, đa diện, lặp lại, và đồng thời. Trong lập luận định tính, cả quá trình qui nạp và diễn dịch đều được vận dụng. Quá trình tư duy cũng lặp lại, với một chu kỳ đi tới đi lui từ thu thập và phân tích dữ liệu đến trình bày lại vấn đề và quay lại. Bổ sung cho quá trình này là các hoạt động đồng thời thu thập, phân tích và viết dữ liệu.

Thinking process is repeated, with a pacing cycle from collection and analysis of data to present the issues and back. Complementary to this process is the simultaneous operation to collect, analyze and write data.
