Tốc độ đô thị hóa , công nghiệp hóa nhanh cộng với dân số bùng nổ gây áp lực ngày càng nặng nề đối với tài nguyên nước hiện có. Nguồn nước ở nhiều đô thị, khu công nghiệp ngày càng bị ô nhiễm bởi nước thải, khí thải và chất thải trong hoạt động sản xuất. Hàm lượng nước thải của ngành công nghiệp dệt may, công nghiệp giấy có chứa xyanua ( CN-) vượt đến 84 lần, H2S vượt 4,2 lần, hàm lượng NH3 vượt 84 lần tiêu chuẩn cho phép nên đã gây ô nhiễm nặng nề các nguồn nước bề mặt trong vùng dân cư.
Trong sản xuất nông nghiệp việc lạm dụng các loại thuốc bảo vệ thực vật làm cho nguồn nước ở sông , hồ, kênh, mương bị ô nhiễm , ảnh hưởng lớn đến môi trường nước và sức khỏe con người. Việc nuôi trồng thủy sản ồ ạt, sử dụng hóa chất quá nhiều, thiếu quy hoạch, không tuân theo quy trình kỹ thuật nên đã gây nhiều tác động tiêu cực tới môi trường nước.
Ở các thành phố lớn, việc gia tăng dân số đã gây ra một lượng chất thải sinh hoạt lớn và điều này cũng là ột nguyên nhân chính giải thích cho sự ô nhiễm môi trường nước. Dân cư quá đông đúc kèm theo sự thiếu hệ thống xử lý nước thải sinh hoạt làm cho những chất thải này trực tiếp đổ ra các con sông, hồ hay kênh đào và đó là lý do tại sao nguồn nước ngày càng trở nên ô nhiễm
