Được xây dựng lên từ một tháp canh từ năm 1180, ban đầu lâu đài Kamar sinh ra với mục đích bảo vệ đất liền khỏi hải tặc. Cho tới thời đại của vua Magnus Ladulas thì nó được nâng lên thành một pháo đài và được xem là hiện đại nhất thời bấy giờ. Năm 1937 tại đây diễn ra lễ ký kết công ước chung và chính sách ngoại giao giữa Thụy Điển, Đan Mạch và Na Uy.
