Cầu được khởi công xây dựng từ năm 1170 vào thời Nam Tống và hoàn thành sau 57 năm. Với chiều dài gần 520 mét, cầu có 24 trụ đá chính (mố cầu) được xây thành đình đài lầu các theo kiểu mái cong ở cả hai đầu Đông-Tây và nhịp giữa dài 100 mét đặt trên 18 chiếc thuyền.
