Điều này giúp cho ngành cao su đầu tư phát triển mở rộng diện tích, đầu tư giống cây, tiếp cận kỹ thuật tiên tiến, xây dựng các nhà máy chế biến cao su với công suất cao hơn. Năm 2008 (sau 2 năm gia nhập WTO), vị thế ngành cao su đã được nâng lên tầm cao mới. Việt Nam đã đứng thứ 6 trên thế giới về diện tích trồng cây cao su, đứng thứ 5 về sản lượng, đứng thứ 3 về năng suất vườn cây và đứng thứ tư về xuất khẩu. Với những lợi thế từ việc trở thành thành viên thứ 151 của WTO, cao su Việt Nam đã có thể cạnh tranh với các đối thủ truyền thống như Thái Lan, Malaysia, Indonesia.
