Hàng thuỷ sản nước ta xuất khẩu đạt kim ngạch 4,25 tỷ USD, giảm 5,7% so với năm 2008 (nhưng tăng 14,2% so với năm 2007).Trong đó, tôm đạt 211 nghìn tấn với trị giá: 1,69 tỷ USD; cá Tra & cá Basa đạt 614 nghìn tấn,trị giá:1,36 tỷ USD
Xuất khẩu thuỷ sản của Việt Nam sang các đối tác lớn trong năm qua như sau: thị trường EU đạt 1,12 tỷ USD, giảm 2,9%; sang Nhật Bản đạt 761 triệu USD, giảm 8,4%; sang Hoa Kỳ đạt 711 triệu USD, giảm 3,8%;…
Trong năm 2009, xuất khẩu thủy sản đã vượt kế hoạch khiêm tốn đề ra từ đầu năm, tuy nhiên vẫn tăng trưởng âm so với năm 2008. Đối với mặt hàng cá tra, cá basa, do Mỹ xếp hai loại cá này vào loại cá da trơn, vì vậy, các doanh nghiệp Việt Nam phải chịu mức thuế chống phá giá từ 36% đến 68%. Ngoài ra các nguyên nhân khác như nguồn nguyên liệu không ổn định, tình hình sản xuất khai thác không thuận lợi, cũng làm giảm tăng trưởng xuất khẩu.
