Những người đang phải sử dụng đường ăn kiêng stevia như một biện pháp hỗ trợ quá trình điều trị bệnh là đối tượng hưởng lợi khá quan trọng của tiểu dự án. Theo Tổ chức Y tế thế giới và Liên đoàn Đái tháo đường thế giới, Việt Nam là một trong những nước có tỷ lệ gia tăng bệnh đái tháo đường (ĐTĐ) nhanh nhất thế giới. Trong 10 năm (2002-2012) số lượng người Việt Nam được chẩn đoán mắc bệnh ĐTĐ tăng 211%. Một thực tế cho thấy, những người mắc bệnh tiểu đường ở nước ta đang có xu hướng trẻ hóa, thường ở độ tuổi từ 30-65, thậm chí đã có bệnh nhân tiểu đường mới chỉ 9-10 tuổi. Theo điều tra của Bệnh viện Nội tiết Trung ương tiến hành năm 2013, tỷ lệ người mắc bệnh đái tháo đường ở Việt Nam (là những người đã phát hiện bệnh, chưa kể số người đã mắc bệnh nhưng chưa phát hiện) chiếm 5,7% dân số (khoảng 3,3 triệu người) và có xu hướng tăng gấp đôi vào năm 2030:
