Theo Cục Đầu tư nước ngoài Bộ Kế hoạch đầu tư, công nghiệp khai khoáng là ngành tập trung nhiều nhất lượng vốn đầu tư của các doanh nghiệp Việt Nam. Trước tình trạng một số nguyên nhiên liệu đầu vào phục vụ cho quá trình sản xuất trong nước ngày càng trở lên khan hiếm, cộng thêm việc hàng rào thuế quan nhập khẩu khá đắt đỏ, một số doanh nghiệp Việt Nam đã chọn cho mình con đường tìm kiếm thị trường, khai thác tài nguyên tại nước ngoài như một giải pháp để tiết kiệm chi phí.
