Hồ chứa nước là một loại hồ nhân tạ

Hồ chứa nước là một loại hồ nhân tạo. Chúng
được hình thành do kết quả của việc xây dựng các
công trình thủy lợi, thủy điện, cải tạo thiên nhiên
v.v.... của con người. So với lịch sử hình thành của
hồ thiên nhiên thì lịch sử của hồ chứa nước rất ngắn.
Trên thế giới, hầu hết các hồ chứa nước đều
được hình thành trên dưới 100 năm trở lại đây.
Ở Việt Nam, các hồ chứa nước có tuổi đời cao
nhất là hơn 40 năm, còn hầu hết chỉ từ 10-30 năm trở
lại đây. Theo thống kê năm 1995 của Viện nghiên
kinh tế và qui hoạch thủy sản - Bộ thủy sản, cả nước
ta có 2.470 hồ chứa nước lớn nhỏ, với diện tích là
183.597,5 ha. Trong tương lai, để đáp ứng nhu cầu
phát triển kinh tế chúng ta sẽ còn xây dựng rất nhiều
hồ chứa nữa, đặc biệt là các hồ cỡ lớn
