Ngày 1/11 năm 2013, dân số Việt Nam vượt ngưỡng 90 triệu, trở thành nước lớn thứ 14 thế giới về dân số. Cùng với dân số gia tăng, Việt Nam đã xuất hiện những tiếng nói khác nhau đối với cơ hội và thách thức do dân số mang lại. Có quan điểm cho rằng là nước lớn thế giới về dân số, hơn nữa dân số trẻ chiếm tỷ trọng lớn, nên Việt Nam đang ở trong "kết cấu vàng" về dân số". Tuy nhiên cũng có quan điểm cho rằng xu thế già hoá dân số của Việt Nam đang hiện rõ, sẽ mang lại sức ép cho phát triển kinh tế.


Chiến tranh kéo dài trong nhiều năm từng làm cho dân số Việt nam giảm mạnh, đặc biệt là nam giới thành niên tương đối ít. Để ứng phó tình trạng này Việt Nam từng khuyến khích sinh nở, nhưng việc này lại dẫn đến dân số tăng trưởng mạnh. Cuối năm 1986, dân số Việt Nam đạt 61 triệu, mang lại sức ép nhất định cho phát triển xã hội. Từ năm 1988, để kiểm soát dân số tăng trưởng quá nhanh, Việt Nam bắt đầu thi hành chính sách kế hoạch hoá gia đình.
